Sustainability and Stewardship at Comino

Team Blue Lagoon is a collaborative task force established in 2025 to protect the ecological integrity and visitor experience of the Blue Lagoon on Comino, one of Malta’s most iconic natural sites and a designated Natura 2000 area. The primary aim is to reshape Comino’s Blue Lagoon future as a sustainable tourism model.

Team Blue Lagoon – A United Front for Comino’s Blue Lagoon Protection

The lagoon, located on the tiny island of Comino, is part of a Natura 2000 protected area, meaning it holds significant environmental value under EU conservation laws.

Who’s Involved?

This team brings together multiple Maltese government entities, and the initiative is spearheaded by:

  • Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) – Team Blue Lagoon – Lead coordinator
  • Transport Malta
  • Environment and Resources Authority (ERA)
  • The Malta Police Force
  •  Civil Protection Department
  • Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism
  • Ministry for Gozo and Planning

Together, they’re tackling the lagoon’s long-standing issues of overcrowding, pollution, and habitat degradation.

Objectives

Team Blue Lagoon focuses on four key goals:

  • Regulating visitor flows through a free online booking system with timed access slots.
  • Enhancing safety by expanding designated swimming zones.
  • Improving waste management with additional sanitation and cleaning resources dedicated to the lagoon’s facilities.
  • Strengthening enforcement on land and at sea to ensure compliance and protect the ecosystem.

Impact

The booking system has already reduced visitor density by 68%, helping to preserve the lagoon’s fragile environment while improving the visitor experience.

What's Next?

The team is working to develop long-term plans for Comino’s rehabilitation. These include:

  • Eco-sensitive infrastructure
  • Controlled access points
  • Restoration of natural habitats

Long-term visibility that allows the proper planning through statistical records that are and continue to be in place after lacking for decades.

This initiative marks a major shift from mass tourism to managed eco-tourism, aiming to preserve Comino’s beauty for generations to come.
