The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has long been at the forefront of sustainability in tourism. Its commitment dates back to 2002, when it launched its own Eco-Certification Programme for hotels and accommodations. This programme was further strengthened in 2011, when its criteria were officially endorsed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
Recognising the evolving global eco-certification landscape, the MTA decided to discontinue its in-house programme as of 31st December 2023, and instead recognise three international eco-labels. In December 2023, the MTA and the GSTC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise their collaboration and reinforce Malta’s alignment with global sustainability standards. The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) has recognised the importance of this initiative and supported its successful implementation.
Working Towards Sustainability
Andrew Agius Muscat, CEO, MHRA, stated:
“The MHRA and MTA are working hand in hand towards the eco-certification of hotels. This initiative contributes significantly to both environmental and ESG objectives. Eco-certification not only enhances a hotel’s standing across online travel platforms but also strengthens Malta’s overall reputation as a sustainable destination.”
Furthermore, Randy Durband, CEO, Global Sustainable Tourism Council, added:
“We are very happy to be in Malta to celebrate this milestone with the Malta Tourism Authority and the MHRA. Having 31 hotels eco-certified demonstrates a strong commitment towards a greener hospitality industry in Malta.”
This follows today’s realm where 31 hotels across Malta proudly hold an international eco-certification label, with another 10 properties currently preparing for their audits. The most recent certifications include five Corinthia Group properties, marking a significant achievement for the local hospitality sector.
Ing. Abigail Cutajar, CEO, Climate Action Authority, remarked:
“Today, the Climate Action Authority celebrates alongside the Malta Tourism Authority as we highlight the hospitality industry’s role as pioneers of GSTC certification. Together, we continue working towards a shared vision for a successful green transition.”
Eco-Certified Hotels
Kevin Fsadni, Deputy CEO, MTA, concluded:
“As of 2024, the MTA is endorsing three international eco-labels. With 31 hotels already certified, sustainability is becoming an integral part of Malta’s hospitality industry. Our goal is to ensure continuous improvement and encourage more hotels to join this important journey.”
Therefore, the MTA’s aim is to ensure continuous improvement, whilst encouraging further hotels in joining this important journey. Hence, on the 27th & 28th of October, 2025, a comprehensive training course providing essential insights and practical examples to support hotel professionals in navigating their sustainability journey and working towards achieving an eco-certification label was organised. Moreover, hotels who have already obtained this eco-certification label were also encouraged to attend in order to continue strengthening their knowledge within this field.
