The Maltese Islands recently welcomed football legend Nemanja Vidić as part of the ongoing strategic partnership between the Malta Tourism Authority and Manchester United with VisitMalta standing as the club’s official destination partner. The four-day visit is set to generate extensive international exposure in key global markets whilst highlighting the Maltese Islands as a high-quality destination focused on authenticity, lifestyle, and year-round tourism beyond the traditional summer season.
Visit at the Local Supporters' Club
Vidić arrived in Malta on Friday 28th November and together with another Manchester United legend, Martin Buchan, visited the Manchester United Supporters’ Club Malta for a special commemoration event and short Q&A session. The visit included fan engagement, autograph signings, and filming for international promotion. This marked Vidić’s first official appearance with the local supporters’ club and further strengthens the connection between the historic club and its Maltese fan base.
Nemanja Vidić Guides Local Youth Footballers During a Football Session
On Saturday 29th November, the focus shifted to youth and sport through a football school session at the Centenary Stadium led by Manchester United Soccer School coaches. Vidić joined the final part of the session, where he observed training, interacted with the young participants, shared professional advice and presented certificates and medals.
Travelling Through Valletta & Senglea
Later, filming continued across Valletta, including a walking tour through the city streets, the Upper Barrakka Gardens, Casa Rocca Piccola and the Mediterranean Conference Centre, showcasing Malta’s urban heritage and history. The day concluded with filming at the Gardjola Gardens in Senglea, highlighting Malta’s fortified harbour landscapes.
Local Meet & Greet with the United Icon
Sunday 30th November placed an emphasis on the social, public and cultural dimensions of the visit. The day began through an interaction with service users of Hospice Malta, where Vidić signed memorabilia and took photos, reflecting the community aspect of the partnership. This was followed by a large public meet and greet at Ta’ Qali National Park, where hundreds of fans enjoyed the opportunity to meet the football icon. Later he joined local supporters to watch Manchester United’s 2–1 victory over Crystal Palace, offering half-time analysis and correctly predicting the final score.
Experiencing Local Gastronomy in Mosta
The day then continued with a visit to the Mosta Dome and its historic shelters, where the United icon also experienced Maltese gastronomy through the tasting of traditional local food, highlighting gastronomy as an essential pillar of our islands’ visitor experience. The cultural journey concluded with an evening visit to the former capital city of Mdina, showcasing Malta’s historical roots and distinctive atmosphere.
Gozo Day-Trip
On Monday 1st December, Vidić travelled to Gozo for a jeep tour visiting Qala Belvedere, Calypso’s Cave, the Ġgantija Temples, the salt pans and the Cittadella. This showcased Gozo’s natural beauty, prehistoric heritage and traditions. This was followed by a boat crossing to Comino, highlighting Malta’s coastal and marine appeal. The visit concluded with wine tasting and platters at the Meridiana Wine Estate, exposing Malta’s growing wine industry, high-quality local produce and agro-tourism experiences as part of the islands’ evolving quality, all-year round tourism product.
