Improving the sustainability of Malta's tourism

The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has taken significant strides to ensure the sustainability and quality of tourism services on the islands. Through two key initiatives—the Quality Assured (QA) seal and the Eco-Certification program—the MTA promotes excellence and environmental responsibility among businesses in the tourism sector.

The Quality Assured (QA) Seal

The QA seal is a voluntary certification designed to recognize businesses that demonstrate high standards of service, professionalism, and consistency. This initiative supports three main sectors within the tourism industry:

  • Destination Management Companies (DMCs): Since its launch in 2008, the QA seal has recognized DMCs that specialize in organizing top-tier conferences and events.
  • Visitor Attractions: Established in 2010, this certification acknowledges attractions such as museums, historic sites, and parks that provide exceptional visitor experiences.
  • Restaurants: Introduced in 2014, this certification highlights dining establishments that uphold superior quality in their services and offerings.

To obtain the QA seal, businesses must undergo a rigorous assessment process, including audits and evaluations, ensuring adherence to strict quality standards. Certified businesses are regularly reassessed to maintain their status, reinforcing a culture of continuous improvement.

Notable businesses that have received the QA seal include:

  • Restaurants: Al Ponte Restaurant, Caviar & Bull, De Mondion, Il Pirata, one80 Kitchen & Lounge
  • Visitor Attractions: Domvs Romana, Fort St. Angelo, Grandmaster’s Palace, MUŻA, National Museum of Archaeology
  • DMCs: A.von Brockdorff Services Ltd, Alpine Sterling DMC, Colours of Malta, ECMeetings Company Ltd, Emotion Events

The Eco-Certification Program

In alignment with global sustainability standards, the MTA endorses internationally recognized eco-certifications for accommodations that commit to sustainable practices. These include:

  • Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC): A globally recognized body that sets sustainability criteria for tourism.
  • Green Key: An international eco-label awarded to environmentally responsible accommodations and businesses.
  • EU Ecolabel: The official European Union label for products and services that meet strict environmental standards.

These certifications replaced Malta’s previous national ECO certification scheme, aiming to align the country’s tourism industry with international best practices. Through this initiative, accommodations are encouraged to integrate sustainability in their operations, benefiting the environment, local communities, and the economy.

Success Stories in Eco-Certification

Malta has made substantial progress in promoting sustainable tourism, with several establishments
receiving eco-certifications:

  • The Duke Boutique Hotel in Gozo: The only eco-certified hotel on the island, meeting all the requirements set by the MTA’s certification scheme.
  • AX The Palace (Sliema): A five-star hotel that successfully renewed its eco-certification after a thorough audit.
  • 22 Hotels (16% of Malta’s accommodations) have achieved eco-certification, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability.
  • Seven farmhouses in Gozo have received eco-certification, further reinforcing sustainable tourism practices in rural areas.

Success Stories in Eco-Certification

Malta’s tourism sector is committed to balancing quality service with sustainability. The QA seal ensures that visitors experience excellence in hospitality, while the Eco-Certification program encourages businesses to adopt environmentally responsible practices. Together, these initiatives position Malta as a premier destination for travellers seeking both high-quality experiences and sustainable tourism choices. As the industry continues to evolve, the MTA’s proactive approach ensures that Malta remains a leader in responsible tourism, offering benefits to both visitors and the local community alike.
