More than 500 pyrotechnicians and support personnel are working around the clock in preparation for the final two nights of the 25th edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival, taking place on 25 April and during the Grand Finale on 30 April at the Grand Harbour.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, accompanied by Malta Tourism Authority Chairman Charles Mangion and CEO Carlo Micallef, visited one of the firing sites in Kalkara, where they met with members of the pyrotechnic teams involved in the festival.
Organised by the Malta Tourism Authority, this year’s festival marks a significant milestone, celebrating 25 years of showcasing Malta’s rich pyrotechnic heritage. The event continues to blend tradition, creativity and innovation, attracting thousands of spectators from Malta and abroad while reinforcing the islands’ position as a year-round cultural tourism destination.
A Landmark Edition with Growing International Reach
The upcoming displays will bring this anniversary edition to a close following a successful programme of shows held in Nadur, Gozo, and Valletta throughout April. Audiences can expect a dynamic mix of competitive and non-competitive pyro-musical performances, alongside traditional Maltese fireworks that showcase the craftsmanship of the local pyrotechnic community.
This year’s festival featured eight teams competing in the pyro-musical competition, an increase from previous editions, with participation from both Maltese and international companies, including countries taking part for the first time. The inclusion of a Canadian pyrotechnic company marked an important step in extending the festival’s international reach beyond Europe.
In total, around 40 fireworks factories and affiliated societies contributed to this year’s programme, complemented by band club performances that brought the traditional festa atmosphere to life. The winners of the 25th edition will be announced during the Grand Finale, recognising the best performances from the competitive evenings held earlier this month in Valletta.
Celebrating Tradition and Cultural Tourism
During the visit, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg expressed his appreciation to all those involved in delivering this milestone edition.
“The Malta Tourism Authority remains committed to supporting this flagship event, which not only strengthens Malta’s position in international tourism markets but also celebrates and preserves our unique pyrotechnic heritage. This 25th anniversary edition reflects our continued investment in cultural tourism and in experiences that highlight the authenticity and creativity of the Maltese Islands,” Dr Borg said.
MTA Chief Executive Officer Carlo Micallef highlighted the festival’s growing international reputation:
“This festival continues to grow in scale and reputation, attracting a diverse audience of visitors who are increasingly seeking authentic cultural experiences. The strong participation of both local and international teams this year further enhances Malta’s profile as a destination that delivers high-quality events beyond the traditional peak season.”
MTA Chairman Charles Mangion emphasised the cultural significance of the event:
“The Malta International Fireworks Festival remains a powerful expression of our islands’ identity. It not only celebrates the craftsmanship and dedication of our pyrotechnic community but also elevates an important element of Maltese tradition into a cultural experience of international standing.”
The Malta Tourism Authority encourages the public and visitors to attend the final two shows and follow the festival’s official social media channels for the latest updates.
