The Licensing & Quality Assurance Department ensures tourism businesses in Malta meet high standards of service, safety and sustainability, supporting excellence through regulation, certification, and stakeholder engagement across the industry.
Licensing
As one of the main QA backbones of Malta’s tourism sector, the Licensing Unit of the Malta Tourism Authority ensures that tourism-related businesses operate at the highest standards of quality, safety and professionalism. Overseeing a diverse range of operators, including hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and tourist guides, the directorate plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of the industry.
Through a rigorous process of application reviews, inspections and permit issuance, the unit upholds service excellence and regulatory compliance. By setting and enforcing industry standards, it safeguards Malta’s reputation as a destination that prioritises visitor experience, consumer protection and operational transparency.
Beyond regulation, the department also serves as a key point of engagement for industry stakeholders, guiding businesses towards best practices and continuous improvement. QA
The Quality Assurance Unit manages various schemes and seals to improve, aid and offer opportunities to main tourism sectors within the industry. This Unit is committed to providing a platform of standards and quality which is backed by numerous training and development initiatives to assist tourism stakeholders to reach higher levels of service and product delivery.
The Quality Assurance Seal is the largest project which this unit is responsible for. It sees to recognise local restaurants, visitor attractions and destination management companies that present customers with the highest competences in terms of quality.
