Malta Travel and Tourism Services Act (Cap. 409)

The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) operates under the Malta Travel & Tourism Services Act (1999), which defines its structure, functions and regulatory responsibilities. This Act governs key aspects of tourism promotion, industry regulation and service standards to ensure a well-managed and sustainable sector.

Chapter 409 of the Laws of Malta empowers the MTA to license and regulate key industry operators, including accommodation providers, travel agents, tour operators and tourist guides. It also authorises inspections and enforcement to uphold quality and compliance across the sector.

Chapter 409 further establishes the Tourism Appeals Board, offering an independent platform for reviewing decisions. Through this legal framework, the Act supports the development of a sustainable, high-quality tourism industry in Malta.
