Carlo Micallef - Chief Executive Officer, Malta Tourism Authority
Profile
Mr Carlo Micallef joined the Malta Tourism Authority in 1997, when it was still known as the National Tourism Organisation Malta, and has since built a distinguished career dedicated to the strategic development and international marketing of the Maltese Islands as a quality tourism destination.
Career at the Malta Tourism Authority
Throughout his career, Mr Micallef progressively occupied all positions within the MTA’s Marketing Directorate and went on to hold several senior roles within the International Marketing Directorate during some of the Authority’s strongest years in tourism performance.
Following his appointment as Chief Marketing Officer, he led a comprehensive restructuring project to refresh the MTA’s overseas marketing operations, branding, public relations, and advertising strategies. These initiatives played a central role in driving the islands’ tourism sector forward as this period was characterised by record growth levels of tourist numbers and tourism  expenditure.
During this period, the MTA also achieved numerous objectives aimed at strengthening tourism during the shoulder months by significantly diversifying source markets whilst reducing dependence on seasonal and traditional markets.
Chief Executive Officer
As Chief Executive Officer, Mr Micallef oversees the Authority’s work to continue strengthening tourism as a key pillar of Malta’s economy and society. His leadership focuses on ensuring that tourism growth is sustainable, balanced and resilient, both for current stakeholders and for future generations.
The Malta Tourism Authority’s strategy under his leadership is to achieve a healthy, sustainable, and quality tourism sector for the Maltese Islands. This includes attracting regular inflows of quality visitors throughout the year from a diverse range of source markets, both from short haul as well as from distant countries, whilst ensuring that visitors who choose Malta are served with the highest levels of professionalism and care.
Through a strong emphasis on close cooperation with all tourism industry stakeholders, to drive  quality, diversification, improved seasonality and long-term planning, Mr Micallef continues to play a central role in shaping Malta’s tourism sector as a high-value, year-round destination rooted in culture, heritage, lifestyle, and authentic experiences.
